Content overview: “8 Years Ago, Netflix Quietly Released the Best Western TV Show of All Time”. Eight years ago, Netflix quietly released Godless, a seven-episode Western miniseries that many now consider the best Western TV show ever made. Starring Jeff Daniels as the ruthless outlaw Frank Griffin and Michelle Dockery as the resilient widow Alice Fletcher, the series was created by Scott Frank and premiered on November 22, 2017. Set in the 1880s in the New Mexico Territory, it centers on a mining town populated almost entirely by women after a mining accident kills most of the men.
When Griffin and his gang threaten the town, the women must band together to defend their home, with help from an injured outlaw played by Jack O'Connell. Despite critical acclaim and multiple Emmy wins, including acting awards for Daniels and supporting actress Merritt Wever, Godless never achieved mainstream buzz, partly due to its release during a crowded streaming season.
