Rep. Analilia Mejia (D-N.J.) addresses the recent fatal shootings involving ICE agents in Texas and Maine during a segment on Meet the Press NOW. She calls for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, arguing that systemic accountability cannot be achieved within the current structure of the agency. Mejia emphasizes that the incidents underscore deeper issues in how immigration enforcement is carried out and advocates for a new framework focused on human rights and oversight.
She also discusses internal Democratic Party dynamics, noting that support for Rep. Hakeem Jeffries as speaker remains strong should Democrats regain control of the House. Mejia confirms that all leadership options are still under consideration, reflecting ongoing conversations about party direction and strategy in the coming legislative session.
