AI Demand Is Inflated And Only Anthropic Is Being Realistic

The perceived surge in demand for artificial intelligence might be overstated, as the metric commonly used to measure AI usage—token consumption—has become skewed. Companies such as Shopify and Meta have introduced internal leaderboards to track how many tokens their employees use, encouraging increased token usage. Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang has even suggested that engineers should allocate a significant portion of their salary towards purchasing tokens. However, this focus on token consumption may not accurately reflect genuine demand for AI technologies.

This inflated token usage is critical because it underpins the entire AI investment cycle, creating a potentially misleading impression of growth. Among various players, Anthropic stands out as one of the few companies taking a more realistic view of actual AI demand. While token consumption figures continue to be promoted enthusiastically, the true market appetite for AI applications might be much more moderate than these internal and public signals suggest.
