Content overview: “Bel Powley and Hayley Squires Star in BBC Thriller 'Shy & Lola' with Coen Brothers Vibe Se”. Bel Powley, known for 'Harry Potter' and 'The Morning Show', and Hayley Squires of 'The Night Manager' lead 'Shy & Lola', a new BBC drama that brings a Coen Brothers-inspired visual style to the UK port town of Grimsby. Written by BAFTA-winning screenwriter Amanda Coe, the series is set to be presented to international buyers at MIPCOM, the global content market in Cannes. The show's creators deliberately drew on the Coen brothers' aesthetic—marked by offbeat characters, dark humor, and striking cinematography—to craft a uniquely British thriller.
By setting the story in Grimsby, a town with a distinct maritime identity and economic challenges, the series aims to offer a fresh, atmospheric backdrop rarely seen on screen. For the BBC, 'Shy & Lola' represents a push into high-concept genre drama with breakout potential, while for Powley and Squires it offers meaty roles that could further elevate their profiles.
