Agence Vulcano-Gibello has seamlessly joined two early 20th-century wings of the Les Verdaines Retirement Home, honoring the site’s Belle Époque character while introducing a modern, functional extension. The new structure is a light-filled, transparent gallery that transcends its role as a mere connector. It functions as a vibrant social space, enhancing resident engagement and well-being through inviting views and open access to natural light. The design maintains a minimalist approach, ensuring the contemporary addition harmonizes with the original buildings rather than overshadowing them.
The project reflects a careful balance between historical preservation and modern needs. By prioritizing transparency and openness, the architects have created an environment conducive to interaction and comfort. This thoughtful integration demonstrates how adaptive reuse can enrich aging structures without compromising their heritage value. The result is a cohesive architectural narrative where past and present coexist gracefully, improving daily life for residents within a historically significant setting.
