“Bruce Helford Named New Showrunner of NBC's 'Newlyweds' Starring Tèa Leoni, Tim Daly and J” — what this page in the network covers. NBC and Universal Television have tapped veteran sitcom producer Bruce Helford as the new showrunner for freshman comedy 'Newlyweds,' replacing Gail Lerner who was let go last Friday. Helford, known for his work on 'The Conners,' brings decades of multi-camera comedy experience to the series starring Tèa Leoni, Tim Daly, and Jamie Lee Curtis. The production, already on a scheduled weeklong hiatus, will extend that break to allow Helford time to settle in and shape upcoming episodes.
This move signals the studio's commitment to stabilizing the show, which has faced creative challenges in its first season. With Helford at the helm, 'Newlyweds' aims to find its footing and capitalize on its star power—a critical step for a broadcast comedy fighting for renewal in a crowded TV landscape.
