CNN talks to Artemis III crew: What's next for the lunar program

NASA has selected four astronauts for the Artemis III mission, a critical step in returning humans to the lunar surface after more than half a century. The crew includes first-time space traveler Andre Douglas, veteran astronaut Frank Rubio, who holds the record for the longest single spaceflight by an American, and test pilot Randy Bresnik, all from NASA. Joining them is an Italian astronaut, completing the international team. The mission is scheduled for launch no earlier than late 2027 and will focus on testing essential technologies needed for sustained lunar exploration.

The flight will be a two-week journey aboard the Orion spacecraft, with the goal of landing on the Moon’s south pole region. This mission marks the first crewed lunar landing since Apollo 17 in 1972 and will serve as a foundation for future long-term presence on the Moon. The selected astronauts will undergo extensive training in preparation for the complex operations involved in descent, surface activities, and ascent. Their success will pave the way for subsequent Artemis missions aimed at establishing a permanent lunar base.
