German Development Minister Reem Alabali Radovan emphasizes the need to move beyond a Eurocentric view in shaping foreign policy, particularly in relations with the Global South. Speaking at the Hamburg Sustainability Conference, she highlights that current German approaches fail to fully recognize the agency and contributions of developing nations. To address this, a new advisory commission has been launched, co-chaired by former Chancellor Olaf Scholz, to guide more equitable and effective international partnerships. The initiative aims to strengthen cooperation in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals, which are increasingly at risk due to global challenges.
Radovan also reflects on Germany’s recent unsuccessful attempt to secure a seat on the UN Security Council, interpreting it as a sign of shifting global power dynamics. She argues that this outcome underscores the necessity for Germany to adapt its foreign policy to a multipolar world, where influence is no longer concentrated in Western capitals. The new strategy seeks to foster mutual respect and collaboration, placing greater emphasis on listening to and learning from partners in the Global South rather than imposing models from Europe.
