In Rome, DKA’s renovation of a historic apartment celebrates the city’s architectural legacy through a careful balance of preservation and modern expression. Original elements such as high ceilings and exposed brick vaults are left visible, emphasizing the building’s age and character rather than masking it. This intentional approach maintains the space’s historical authenticity while creating room for contemporary design. The interior gains energy from bold blue accents integrated into custom portals and key structural features, serving both functional and aesthetic roles in guiding sightlines and defining zones.
The interplay between cool blue details and the warm, rough texture of the brickwork establishes a dynamic contrast that feels cohesive and refined. Sleek painted surfaces complement the rawness of the masonry, resulting in a layered, sophisticated environment. By respecting the original fabric of the structure, the project demonstrates how modern living can coexist with heritage architecture. The result is a space that honors its past while embracing current design sensibilities, offering a model for sensitive renovations in historic urban settings.
