Content overview: “England vs Greece: Lionesses Face Crucial World Cup Playoff Second Leg at St George's Park”. England host Greece tonight at 7.30pm BST in the second leg of their Women’s World Cup playoff, holding a 3-1 aggregate lead from Friday’s first leg in Crete. The Lionesses, one of the world’s best-resourced teams, are expected to progress to a final playoff tie, but the real challenge lies in sharpening their style to contend for next summer’s World Cup in Brazil. Manager Sarina Wiegman has plenty to work on after an uninspiring first-leg performance, and training at St George’s Park under gloomy clouds reflected the mood.
Beyond tonight, England face six key questions over the next eight months as they aim to reclaim their status as true contenders. Meanwhile, Japan’s women’s team, known as Nadeshiko, continue to push boundaries—they won the 2011 World Cup, reached the 2015 final, and claimed this year’s Women’s Asian Cup under Nils Nielsen before Michihisa Kano took over.
