A year-long undercover investigation by the BBC has uncovered a growing problem of illegal trade occurring openly on British high streets. The inquiry began with the confiscation of illicit tobacco in Rochdale and expanded to reveal a widespread network of criminal activity involving the sale of Class A drugs, cocaine, illegal vapes, and smuggled cigarettes. Many local shops are found to be operating as fronts for this illicit trade, using various methods to conceal illegal goods from authorities.
The report highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing these covert operations within legitimate businesses. By documenting transactions in real-time, the investigation demonstrates how easily prohibited items reach consumers through these outlets. The findings raise concerns about the safety of retail environments on the high street and question the effectiveness of existing regulations in preventing such criminal enterprises.
