“Fake BBC Report Spreads Misinformation About Flydubai Hijacking” — what this page in the network covers. False videos are circulating after the attempted hijacking of a FlyDubai flight between Dubai and Tel Aviv. One fake 'BBC' report falsely claims an Indian passenger was behind the incident and links him to the stabbed pilot, Smit Machchhar. However, the video is an AI-generated deepfake: the BBC never broadcast it, and its footage and audio were doctored.
A second clip was also misrepresented and was actually filmed in Dubai, not over the area where the incident occurred. In this episode of Truth or Fake, Vedika Bahl fact-checks the viral misinformation and explains how to spot such deepfakes. The spread of these false reports underscores the dangers of misinformation during breaking news events and the importance of verifying sources.
