“France and US Dominate Rapid and Blitz at London's Pall Mall Masters” — what this page in the network covers. Top-level chess returned to central London's clubland with the Pall Mall Masters, where France and the United States dominated the rapid and blitz events. The competition, held at the prestigious RAC clubhouse, provided a rare test of UK skills against strong international opposition. While the annual ChessFest in Trafalgar Square draws over 20,000 visitors, elite master chess in the capital is uncommon outside of events like the Oxford v Cambridge Varsity match, which the RAC has hosted for nearly 50 years.
The Athenaeum club also made headlines in 2023 when prodigy Bodhana Sivanandan defeated former British champion Peter Lee. The Pall Mall Masters underscores London's growing role as a chess hub and highlights the challenge British players face from world-class rivals.
