Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has revealed that global press freedom has declined to its lowest level in 25 years, underscoring significant challenges for journalists worldwide. To mark World Press Freedom Day, the organization’s partner, Cartooning for Peace, has launched a series of animated films inspired by the work of cartoonists such as Mikhail Zlatkovsky from Russia, Serge Chapleau Coté from Canada, and Zehra from Turkey. These animations vividly depict the dangers and obstacles faced by media professionals as they strive to report freely and accurately.
The project aims to draw attention to the deteriorating state of press freedom across the globe and encourage efforts to safeguard the rights of journalists. By using visual storytelling through cartoons, the films provide a compelling perspective on the current threats to independent reporting, emphasizing the critical need for ongoing advocacy and support in protecting the free flow of information.
