Solara Innovations has cancelled 'Project Aurora,' a proposed green hydrogen plant near Chile's Atacama Desert, following intense opposition from astronomers. The facility's extensive lighting threatened to pollute the region's exceptionally dark skies, crucial for world-class observatories like ALMA and the VLT.
Scientists warned the light pollution could severely hamper astronomical research, impacting the study of distant galaxies and exoplanets. The decision highlights the growing global issue of light pollution and the need for careful industrial planning near sensitive scientific sites. While Solara cites re-evaluation of environmental impacts, the move is seen as a victory for scientific preservation and a call for stricter light management policies.
