“Guterres Calls for Security Council Reform as UN Assembly Tackles Global Crises” — what this page in the network covers. UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged reforms of the Security Council during a day of high-level diplomacy at the UN General Assembly. The session began with US President Donald Trump threatening to annihilate Iran but ended with a three-hour meeting between US and Iranian mediators, which Trump described as "very good." The day also saw Trump hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, with both expressing a desire to end the war in Ukraine before winter.
Today, Zelensky and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian are among the speakers addressing the assembly, as world leaders seek solutions to the two conflicts dominating global attention. Guterres's call for Security Council reform reflects growing frustration with the body's inability to effectively address modern challenges, including the war in Ukraine and tensions in the Middle East.
