Wild bison have been reintroduced to the Cumbria landscape for the first time in 6,000 years, marking a historic moment in UK conservation. The release was managed by Donovan Wright, a specialist bison ranger, as part of efforts to rewild and restore natural habitats across Britain. This initiative brings a species that once roamed the area back to its native environment, enhancing biodiversity and ecological balance.
Coinciding with the 200th anniversary of the Zoological Society of London, this project also prompts reflection on the changing role of zoos and conservation institutions. Rather than solely focusing on captivity, there is a growing emphasis on habitat restoration and supporting wildlife in the wild. The return of wild bison to Cumbria signals a broader shift in conservation strategies toward active species preservation within their natural settings.
