An Indian billionaire's son has stepped forward to offer a sanctuary for hippos in Colombia that trace their origins to Pablo Escobar’s private zoo. Anant Ambani, son of tycoon Mukesh Ambani, formally appealed to the Colombian government to halt plans to euthanize the animals, which have caused environmental disruption in local waterways. He emphasized the importance of finding humane alternatives and proposed relocating the hippos to a suitable facility in India.
The request has drawn international attention, highlighting concerns over animal welfare and ecological balance. While the Colombian authorities weigh options, Ambani’s gesture underscores growing interest in global conservation efforts. The hippos, originally imported by Escobar, have multiplied over time and now inhabit rivers and wetlands, prompting debate on how best to manage their presence without resorting to lethal measures.
