Inside Ojude Oba: Yoruba cultural festival rides on in Nigeria | DW News

The Ojude Oba festival in Ijebu-Ode, southwestern Nigeria, continued its vibrant celebration in 2025 despite the absence of a reigning Awujale for the first time in 65 years. The late Awujale, who played a key role in elevating the festival to an international platform highlighting Yoruba culture and fashion, passed away that year, and a new king has yet to be installed. Nonetheless, thousands gathered to honor his legacy and sustain the festival's rich cultural heritage, which has been upheld for over 130 years.

The event featured lively horseback parades and other colorful displays, reflecting the community's commitment to preserving tradition across generations. The festival remains a significant cultural occasion that showcases the enduring spirit and identity of the Yoruba people. DW News provided coverage from their West Africa correspondent, emphasizing the importance of cultural continuity amidst change.
