In Senegal, many young athletes see football as their only path to a better life, willing to endure great personal sacrifices in pursuit of international careers. This desperation makes them vulnerable to fraudulent recruiters who exploit their dreams with false promises of contracts and opportunities abroad. Investigative journalists Sarah Sakho and Simon Martin uncover a hidden network preying on these hopefuls, using deception and manipulation to extract money and personal information. The report sheds light on the growing threat posed by organized fraud within the country’s football ecosystem.
The story highlights efforts by local authorities and football associations to combat this exploitation, including awareness campaigns and stricter verification processes for player transfers. Despite these measures, the lure of foreign leagues continues to attract scammers targeting youth from underserved communities. The investigation underscores the urgent need for stronger protections and transparency in youth football recruitment across West Africa.
