Lost film of French cinema pioneer retrieved from US attic • FRANCE 24 English

A forgotten wooden trunk, passed down through generations and stored in various outbuildings for over 100 years, has yielded a remarkable discovery. Retired high school teacher Bill McFarland opened it out of curiosity, uncovering a collection of film reels. Among them was a lost short film attributed to Georges Méliès, a pioneering figure in early French cinema known for his innovative use of narrative storytelling and visual effects during the formative years of motion pictures.

The film, found spliced within one of ten reels, represents a significant addition to the surviving works of Méliès, whose contributions helped shape the foundations of cinematic art. The discovery highlights the importance of preserving personal archives, as unexpected treasures can emerge from private collections. The footage remains under assessment, but its potential historical value is substantial, offering new insight into one of cinema’s earliest creative voices.
