Mariana Da Cruz and Morenike discuss their artistic journey in blending diverse musical genres with personal and cultural identity. In a conversation hosted by Jennifer Ben Brahim, they explore how music becomes a vehicle for expressing social and political narratives, particularly those rooted in Brazil’s complex history. Da Cruz’s latest album, "Son Sistema," reflects her dual heritage through rhythms like amapiano, baile funk, and shatta, creating a sonic bridge between Africa and Brazil. The project also examines the evolution of Black club music and its global influence.
The discussion highlights how artificial intelligence is emerging as a tool in creative processes, not as a replacement but as a collaborator in sound design and composition. Both artists emphasize authenticity and the importance of staying grounded in lived experience while embracing innovation. Their work challenges genre boundaries and invites listeners to consider music as a dynamic expression of identity, resistance, and transformation across cultures.
