Director Nicolas Winding Refn is set to write and direct a reimagined version of the cult classic 'Maniac Cop', marking a significant collaboration with Mubi and Goodfellas. The project, produced under Refn’s byNWR Originals banner, will receive full financing from Mubi, which has also committed to a broad theatrical release across multiple territories.
This announcement represents a strategic shift for the streaming platform, which aims to bridge the gap between arthouse curation and large-scale genre filmmaking. The original 1988 film, noted for its gritty depiction of urban decay and institutional failure, provides fertile ground for Refn’s signature atmospheric style and focus on complex anti-heroes.
