Abelardo de la Espriella has officially taken office as Colombia’s president following a tightly contested run-off election. The former lawyer, identified as a right-wing populist, began his term on August 8 in a ceremony held at an unconventional venue, marking a break from established political traditions. His administration has pledged to intensify efforts against drug trafficking organizations and guerrilla groups while strengthening relations with the United States. The narrow margin of victory underscores deep divisions within Colombian society as he initiates a bold agenda focused on security and international cooperation.
