The Democratic Importance of Satire and Free Expression
Judy Woodruff examines the significance of political satire in maintaining a robust democracy, speaking with Joshua Johnson from The Onion and scholar Sophia McClennen. Their conversation underscores how satire functions as a critical tool for holding power to account, using humor to reveal contradictions and challenge dominant narratives. By pushing the limits of expression, satirical voices help assess the resilience of democratic norms and institutions. The ability to mock leaders and systems is not merely comedic—it reflects a society’s commitment to transparency, open debate, and civic engagement.
