National Savings and Investments (NS&I) has launched an urgent outreach effort to inform more than 30,000 families affected by a technical flaw in its handling of deceased estate accounts. The error, arising from a failure in data aggregation, prevented accurate tracking of financial assets held by individuals who have passed away. As a result, executors were unable to access or manage these funds, disrupting the estate settlement process during a sensitive period for families. The issue stemmed from inconsistencies in reconciling multiple products under single account holders, leading to frozen portfolios that remained undetected for an extended period.
In response, NS&I is actively correcting the data discrepancies and contacting affected representatives to restore access and support. The incident has prompted renewed scrutiny of operational practices within public financial institutions, particularly regarding the management of legacy accounts and the transparency of administrative systems. Concerns have been raised about the reliability of state-backed services when managing sensitive personal finances after death, highlighting the need for improved oversight and clearer communication during critical life events.
