Brooklyn-based Studio Vural has transformed a 1920s industrial building on Barrow Street in New York’s West Village into a modern residential loft. Originally a herring canning factory, the structure retains its raw industrial features—exposed brick, timber beams, and high ceilings—while introducing a series of sculptural, pod-like volumes that define distinct living zones. These architectural elements serve as private spaces for sleeping, working, and relaxing, carefully integrated within the expansive open plan. The design emphasizes spatial clarity and functional separation without disrupting the building’s historic character.
A consistent tonal green palette unifies the intervention, appearing in cabinetry, wall finishes, and built-in furnishings. This subtle yet deliberate use of color enhances the sense of cohesion while contrasting softly with the existing concrete, wood, and brick surfaces. The renovation balances preservation and innovation, using the original structure as a canvas for contemporary living. The result is a harmonious blend of past and present, where architectural form supports both aesthetic refinement and practical daily use.
