American journalist Danny Fenster was in Myanmar during the 2021 military coup. Initially observing events from afar through his phone, he soon found himself arrested and imprisoned, experiencing firsthand the realities of life under authoritarian rule. His story, told through a powerful illustrated narrative, captures the fear, uncertainty, and resilience faced by those caught in the conflict.
The comic "Notes from a Burmese Prison," co-created by Fenster and artist Amy Kurzweil, offers a personal account of detention and resistance. It provides insight into the conditions inside a Burmese prison and the psychological toll of incarceration. The full piece is available on The Verge’s website, where it stands as both a testimony and a warning about the fragility of freedom.
