Content overview: “SNL Cold Open: Colin Jost as Pete Hegseth Addresses U.S.S. Lincoln Crew, Teases Live Execu”. Saturday Night Live opened with Colin Jost portraying Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in a sketch centered on the U.S.S. Lincoln, a Navy vessel that has been at sea for 322 days under reportedly poor conditions. The real-life carrier's extended deployment has drawn attention to crew morale and operational strain, but in the sketch, Hegseth dismisses the sailors' hardships and instead overcompensates with bravado.
The bit underscores the disconnect between Pentagon leadership and frontline service members, a theme that resonates amid ongoing debates over military readiness and support. Jost's Hegseth also promotes a plan to stream a live execution, a darkly satirical jab at the administration's media-savvy but controversial policies. By pairing a real-world military story with an absurd proposal, SNL highlights the administration's tendency to prioritize spectacle over substance.
