Sudan has been engulfed in a severe conflict over the last three years involving its national army and the Rapid Support Forces, resulting in a massive humanitarian emergency. This turmoil has displaced more than 11 million people, forcing many to flee their homes and seek refuge both within Sudan and in neighboring countries. Libya has become a key destination for these refugees, ranking just behind Chad in the number of Sudanese asylum seekers it hosts.
In particular, Kufra province in southeastern Libya has become a vital sanctuary, located roughly 250 kilometers from Sudan’s border. An estimated 40,000 to 60,000 Sudanese refugees have settled in various camps and towns within Kufra, escaping the ongoing violence. Reporters from FRANCE 24 have documented the difficult living conditions and pressing needs faced by these displaced communities, highlighting the urgent humanitarian challenges in the region.
