Content overview: “The Deadly Toll of Migration: Tracking the Path to the Canary Islands”. The Canary Islands have become a primary, albeit perilous, destination for thousands of migrants attempting to enter Europe as asylum seekers. Efforts by the European Union to tighten borders elsewhere have funneled desperate individuals onto this dangerous Atlantic route, resulting in a tragic loss of life. In collaboration with the University of British Columbia’s Global Reporting Program, PBS News investigates the reality of this maritime journey.
Special correspondent Malcolm Brabant joins the reporting team to document the conditions faced by those making the crossing. The report explores the tension between European migration policies and the humanitarian crisis unfolding at sea, where thousands continue to risk everything for a chance at safety.
