President Donald Trump announced that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents will be assigned to US airports starting Monday, with border czar Tom Homan overseeing the operation. This decision aims to support Transportation Security Administration (TSA) personnel during a period of operational challenges caused by ongoing government shutdowns and political opposition.
The deployment raises questions about the specific duties ICE agents will perform at airports, including whether they will engage in immigration enforcement or focus solely on assisting TSA functions. The situation has sparked considerable debate among lawmakers, especially Democrats, who have expressed strong concerns about the presence of ICE agents in airport security roles. The effort reflects the administration's approach to managing airport security amid political and logistical pressures.
