Uefa has strongly opposed Fifa's plan to privatize World Cup rights by selling them to private investors based in the United States. In an emergency gathering of all 55 Uefa member associations, the organization issued a statement rejecting the proposal unanimously and without hesitation. The meeting, which lasted less than two hours, brought together all member nations, including smaller federations that were previously considered potential supporters of the privatization due to possible financial gains.
This collective opposition could lead to a boycott of Fifa events, starting with the upcoming Under-20 Women’s World Cup, if Fifa president Gianni Infantino moves forward with the privatization scheme. The situation reflects a significant increase in tensions between European football authorities and Fifa leadership. As of now, neither Fifa nor Uefa have presented any alternative plans or solutions regarding the World Cup rights issue.
