Health officials are urgently seeking to locate dozens of passengers who disembarked from the MV Hondius at St Helena following a confirmed hantavirus outbreak on the cruise ship. According to the ship's operator, 29 passengers from various countries left the vessel on April 24, while the Dutch government has reported a higher estimate of 40 individuals. Authorities are prioritizing this search to prevent further transmission of the virus.
The seriousness of the outbreak is underscored by the death of a 69-year-old woman in South Africa shortly after leaving the ship, along with two other fatalities that occurred onboard. Both local and international health agencies are collaborating to identify and monitor those who may have been exposed during the cruise, ensuring they receive appropriate medical care and that public health risks are minimized.
