What happens when you break a bone? - Gurpreet Baht and Natalie Pang

When a bone breaks, the body initiates a complex healing process involving several stages. Blood vessels rupture at the injury site, forming a clot that stabilizes the area and attracts immune cells to clear debris. Specialized cells called osteoblasts begin producing new bone tissue, while others break down damaged bone. Over time, a soft callus forms, which hardens into a bony callus, gradually restoring strength and structure. This entire process can take weeks to months, depending on the fracture type and individual factors.

Different fractures—such as simple, compound, or greenstick—require distinct approaches to treatment. Simple fractures may heal with immobilization using casts or splints, while more severe cases might need surgical intervention like pins, plates, or screws. The body’s natural ability to regenerate bone is remarkable, but proper alignment and support are essential for full recovery. Healing varies based on age, health, and the location of the break, highlighting the intricate balance between biology and medical care in restoring skeletal integrity.
