US President Donald Trump has publicly criticised the United Kingdom and its leader Keir Starmer regarding the management of the Chagos Islands. During a press conference addressing the US-Israel conflict in Iran, Trump voiced his disapproval of how Britain has handled the territory. He emphasized that the UK should not relinquish control of Diego Garcia, a strategic military base crucial to American defense interests.
The Chagos Islands, known officially as the British Indian Ocean Territory, are situated in the Indian Ocean approximately 5,799 miles from the UK. This remote location serves as a vital military hub for the United States, underscoring its geopolitical significance. The ongoing debate around sovereignty and control of the islands has drawn attention amid broader international conflicts, highlighting their importance to US foreign policy.
