World Press Freedom Day emphasizes that press freedom is not only about protecting journalists but also about ensuring the public's right to access accurate and reliable information. David Kaye, a former UN rapporteur, stresses that the key concern lies in who controls the flow of information rather than just who gets to speak. This viewpoint shifts focus to how information landscapes are influenced by powerful technology companies and political forces, affecting the availability and integrity of news.
The discussion highlights the importance of press freedom for maintaining an informed public and a healthy democracy. It examines the press's role in holding authorities accountable and raises awareness about potential threats from large tech firms to free expression. Overall, the day serves as a reminder that press freedom remains a critical foundation for democratic societies, ensuring citizens can access truthful information vital for their participation in civic life.
