Louis Theroux explores the unconventional and intense world of Los Angeles' dog culture, where canine companionship takes on extreme forms. He encounters owners deeply committed to their dogs, many of whom are devoted to high-energy or aggressive breeds. Through personal interviews and on-the-ground observation, Theroux reveals the emotional bonds, cultural influences, and social dynamics that shape this subculture. The documentary captures both the devotion and the risks involved in living with powerful animals in a densely populated urban environment.
The film examines how factors like urban isolation, shifting attitudes toward animal ownership, and breed-specific trends contribute to the city’s unique canine landscape. Theroux’s thoughtful approach uncovers the motivations behind these relationships, highlighting the fine line between love and obsession. With candid storytelling and immersive footage, the documentary offers insight into a hidden layer of life in one of America’s largest cities, where dogs play an unexpectedly central role in human identity and community.
