Content overview: “Tim Dowling on the Joy of Finally Fixing a Light Switch and Joining the Competent”. The Guardian Lifestyle Oct 10, 2026 • 5:00 AM 1 views In his latest column, Tim Dowling reflects on a rare moment of domestic triumph after successfully fixing a light switch, a task that has long eluded him. The piece, published in The Guardian, captures the small but satisfying victory of joining 'the ranks of competent people,' as he puts it.
Dowling notes the alignment of other household improvements: his garden is tidy thanks to 'Gardening Steve,' the back door has fixed itself with cooler weather, and the bathtub's clawed feet are safely supported on planks over a sinking floor. He admits to adjusting his standards with age, accepting temporary fixes as permanent solutions if nothing else goes wrong.
